Is drinking bottled water wrong because there are global water scarcity issues?

Everyone deserves access to a safe, reliable and affordable supply of drinking water.

Bottled water cannot replace tap water. Access to drinking water is a societal issue that needs leadership by governments and development organizations, with involvement from the private sector.  We ensure that our work with water resources in the U.S. is sustainable and we support Nestlé’s efforts globally to deal with water-related challenges.

Bottled water is a visible but tiny user of water, with Nestlé Waters 2006 usage amounting to 0.0009% of the total fresh water withdrawal worldwide.  This is equivalent to removing 6 gallons from a 660,000 gallon Olympic-sized swimming pool. In reality, most water is used in agriculture (70%) to grow our food.

  • In the United States, we manage the springs we use for our spring water products for long-term viability. Eleven natural resource managers bring their expertise to carefully oversee these springs.  And when we purchase water from public sources for our purified and drinking water products, we only purchase what has been identified as available supply by the local water authority.

Our company works with relief organizations and others to help bring bottled water to a number of communities in need.  Please click to learn more about those efforts in
The Nestlé Water Management Report.
