Is bottled water a waste of resources?

Every product uses natural resources in its creation. Bottled water is actually an efficient user of resources. It is a healthful, no-calorie beverage that uses less water and less plastic to manufacture than some other bottled beverages. Bottled spring water, for example, contains no ingredients to grow or process and therefore uses less water in the manufacturing process compared to other packaged beverages. Also, our plastic PET bottles for non-carbonated water typically use less plastic than other plastic beverage bottles that are used to bottle carbonated beverages or beverages that are heated during the bottling process. Without having to heat or carbonate the water, the walls of a plastic bottle that contains water can be lighter.

Nestlé Waters North America realizes there is more to be done, and we are leading the industry toward more responsible packaging, manufacturing, transport and water sourcing. For example we:

  • Reduced plastic content in our packaging by 40 % in the last 15 years. In 2007, we introduced the Eco-Shape™ bottle — our lightest half-liter plastic
    beverage container
    .

  • Have the most U.S. Green Building Council LEED-certified beverage plants in North America, resulting in vast reductions in our energy and water usage, CO2 emissions and waste.

  • Save transportation energy by making nearly all single serve bottles at our own plants, planning efficient truck routes and locating our bottling facilities in the regions where most of our products are consumed.

  • Already an efficient user of water with very little waste, Nestlé Waters North America reduced total water consumption in our plants by 7.8% since 2000.

  • Employ 11 natural resource managers, who manage the springs we use for our spring water products for long term viability.
