Dear Mr. Finken:
If Alderman George Cardenas wants to impose a tax on Chicago citizens for making a healthful lifestyle choice by drinking more water than high-calorie, sugary beverages (August 14, 2007, Bottled water tax on tap?), then the additional revenue should at least be put to good use by overhauling under-funded recycling initiatives. Used water bottles account for less than one percent of all municipal waste. To truly make a difference on the environment, Alderman Cardenas should focus his efforts on creating a progressive recycling and education that would recycle all plastic food and beverage containers whether they contain ketchup, peanut butter or water. Right now, unfortunately, recycling laws and procedures are applying 1970s solutions to a 2007 problem.
Sincerely,
Jane Lazgin
