Dear Editor:
“Kick the Bottled Water Habit,” August 14 discourages people from making an important choice for health. Americans need to drink more water – whether bottled or tap -- to decrease their caloric intake from beverages.
Here are two facts to consider: Americans are getting, on average, 226 more calories per day from beverages than they did a generation ago and growth in overweight and obese children is up 360 percent.
Bottled water is an alternative to higher-calorie, sweetened beverages. It is the best option when tap water isn’t available or preferred. Its convenience and accessibility fit into the on-the-go lifestyle many people lead today.
But a healthy lifestyle is not a tradeoff for a healthy environment. At Nestle Waters, we have introduced the Eco-shape ½ liter bottle, which is ultr-light and uses less plastic than any other beverage container. It is also 100 percent recyclable. Nestle Waters supports improving recycling programs that make it easier to recycle all plastic containers, not just beverage containers.
Compared to many other beverage choices, bottled water is better for both your health and the environment.
