Dear Editor,
Re: Rethinking Water (August 17, 2007)
What’s missing from “Rethink Water (August 17) is that drinking plenty of water is a healthy lifestyle choice. On average, Americans get 226 more calories a day from beverages than they did a generation ago and the number of overweight and obese children is up 360 percent.
People also want to make environmentally responsible choices. Nestle Waters does, too. Our Eco-shape ½ liter bottle is the lightest ½ liter beverage bottle ever produced. It has, on average, 30% less plastic than any comparably sized beverage container in America – and all of our plastic bottles are 100 percent recyclable. And, unlike other beverage manufacturers, we make all of our small plastic containers in-house and don’t truck these empty bottles into our plants, saving 6.6 million gallons of fuel each year.
Outdated recycling programs are a problem that needs addressing. We advocate progressive recycling programs that capture all plastic food and beverage containers, whether they contain ketchup, peanut butter, or water, with greater convenience for people. Right now, most municipal recycling programs apply 1970s solutions to a 2007 problem.
Sincerely,
Jane Lazgin
