Re: Water Snob Guilt: It's Time We Got to Know Our Faucet Again (August 25, 2007)
Dear Editor:
Nestlé Waters shares the author’s concern about the environment. We are doing our part with our new Eco-shape bottle for Ozarka which contains 30% less plastic than most other ½ liter beverage containers currently on store shelves. We also advocate stronger recycling programs that would recycle more plastic food and beverage containers, whether they contain ketchup, peanut butter, or water.
However, we regret that the health benefits of bottled water get only a passing mention. Bottled water is a healthy alternative to sweetened beverages. On average, Americans get 226 more calories a day from beverages than they did a generation ago and the number of overweight and obese children is up 360%.
Americans need to drink more water – whether bottled or tap. Calling for people to stop drinking bottled water can therefore have negative health impacts, especially when most of what Americans drink come in bottles or cans.
Sincerely,
Jane Lazgin
